1.      Source identification:
a.      The tittle of my film was “Twenty eight feet” and it was A SHORT DOCUMENTARY ABOUT DAVID WELSFORD, WHO HAS GIVEN UP THE LUXURIES OF LAND IN SEARCH FOR HAPPINESS AND ADVENTURE ON A 50 YEAR OLD WOODEN BOAT HE RESTORED FROM A SCRAP HEAP. This film was produced by Ivan Kender and the Url was http://www.shortoftheweek.com/2014/05/20/twenty-eight-feet/
2.      Aspects that make it a good documentary:
·         The music was relatable to what they were talking about.
·         They provided good information about David’s present life and why he is doing what he does.
·         The whole video was super interesting therefore I was paying full attention the whole time.
·         It kinda serves as a lesson in the way that they show us that money is not everything.
·         It seemed like everything they provided for us was accurate and truthful.
3.      Improvements that could be made:

a.      The only thing that I would say that they could have done better was that they never really provided any information about David’s past. That would have allow the audience to relate more to him.

Blog 18- UK is expanding

Topic: UK is expanding- source identification.
On May 26, 2014 Linda B. Blackford wrote an article titled, “University of Kentucky spending $4 million to demolish eight buildings this summer”. I found this article on a website called Kentucky.com under the tab [Local News].

Topic: UK expanding- word summary
In this article the author talks about how the University of Kentucky is tearing down a few old buildings on campus in order to build new dorms and new dinning services. Not everyone is happy about this decision due to a couple things. The first reason is that these buildings have been on campus since a very long time ago so they are part of the history of UK and the second is that this is going to cost A LOT of money. Just the demolishing of the buildings will be around $4 million and that’s nothing to how much the construction of the new things will be. The main concern that the author shows in this article is that the new dorms will add an extra 9,000 students to the population in this campus. This will force the university to have to build new facilities in order for things to keep running smoothly. This project is expected to be completed by spring semester of 2016.

Topic: UK expanding- reflection/questions

This article will be useful in my research because I can now have some more concrete reasons to connect the idea of the need for the JC to be bigger with how the population on campus will be growing in the next few years. It will also be helpful because I can show how money isn’t the issue for expanding the JC since we can see that UK has the money for all this construction. Some questions I have are: Why is UK mostly focusing on having more dorms and dinning places? What other construction plans are going to have to be thought of with this expansion on campus? Where does UK get all this money and who decides what it is used for?

Interview about the JC

Topic: Interview- source identification
For this blog post I’m going to be talking about the interview I did. I interviewed a kid that lives on my floor named Anthony Wing on Wednesday (10/15/14). The reason I decided to interview him is because he is really into working out and goes to the JC every day of the week. My interview consisted of 10 questions that had something to do with the JC.

Topic: Interview- Word Summary
Although I asked 10 good/helpful questions and got great answers for them, I’m going to be focusing on 3 of the questions I asked. The reason I want to focus one these 3 questions is because I can use them later on during my research. The first question I want to focus on was, what is the thing you like the least about the JC, and why? For this question Anthony said, “The size of the JC. Reason being is because since there are so many students in this university the JC is always packed. I don’t mind that a lot of people use the JC, but I hate how I have to either take breaks/slow down my work out while I wait for a certain machine to get open.” The second question I asked was, what do you like the most about the JC, and why? In his answer he said, “To be honest the hours of the JC. I like how they are open from very early until very late. This is great cause as college students we have a lot of other responsibilities and with the hour flexibility I am able to fit my work out of the day in no matter what other things I have going on that day.” The last question I want to talk about was, if you could change/add anything to the JC what would it be? Anthony said, “If I was able to do ANYTHING to the JC, I would make expand the size and add more weight machines. This would allow students to have a quicker workout since it wouldn’t get so crowded in there.”

Topic: Interview- Reflections/questions

Like I said earlier, this interview will be helpful in further research because I now have new ideas of possible topics on the JC that I should look more into. It also was helpful because all my other blogs have come from articles but since this information came from another student, I can relate to it. I don’t really have any major questions since the whole point of the interview was to answer the questions I had. The one question I had after doing the interview was, why hasn’t the university expanded the size of the JC by now knowing that it gets super crowded in there?

Reflection of the Blog posts
1.      My research skills as well as my writing skills have improved over the course of the blog pots. The reason I say this about my research techniques is because I learned how to find credible sources, I got better and better every week at finding the most important information of the source I was looking at, and lastly I started using one source to figure out what I wanted to look for next. In the other hand, my writing skills have improved because the process I was using was different than what I was used to, therefor I now have a wider variety of techniques when it comes to writing.
2.      The thing that worked the best for me in the process of writing the blog posts was that I gained a lot of knew knowledge on the topics I was researching. This led me to be able to give accurate and relative information in all my posts.

3.      One difficulty I ran into during my blogs was when we first started doing them and it was that I didn’t really know if some of the sources I was looking at were credible. I was hesitant whether or not I should use them for my blogs. Another difficulty I ran into was that after doing a certain amount of blogs, I was having a hard time finding good articles about my topic because I already had used most of the ones on the web and the ones I hadn’t used talked about things I had already included in a previous post.

Blog 15- Expanding the JC

Topic: The Johnson Center- source identification
I found this article in a website called Kentucky Kernel and the URL is http://kykernel.com/2013/03/06/crowded-johnson-center-could-expand/. The title of this article is “Crowded Johnson Center could expand”. This article was published by Abigail Shipp on March 6, 2013.

Topic: The Johnson Center- Word summary
This article focused on the size of the Johnson Center. The author acknowledged the fact that with the new dorms being built and all the other construction going on the number of students is only going to start increasing. She mentions how the Johnson Center was already crowded enough last year which explains why it is so crowded this year.  She also points out how a lot of students aren’t getting their full work out because of the waiting time and some aren’t even going to the gym for that same reason. The title of this article mentions how the Johnson Center needs to expand inorder to provide the students a better opportunity. The author interviewed UK’s director of Campus Recreation, Ron Lee, and explained how he is one step ahead of the game since he told her “We’re aware that, during our prime time (from 4 p.m. to 9 p.m), we don’t have enough space. We were already maxed out when we opened in 2003,” Lee said. “So we’ve made proposals to expand the facilities to meet the needs.” Although this is guaranteed to happen Lee explained how the proposed expansion of the JC would add about 42,000 square feet to the existing space. This would obviously be something great for the JC.
Topic: The Johnson Center- Reflection/questions
This article is useful because I can see that I’m not the only one who thinks it is too crowded in the Johnson center and I now have a source to back up this statement. It also showed how more students would be taking advantage of the JC if it wasn’t so crowded. Some questions I have are: What has to happen for the proposal to become active? When would this expansion be taking place? How long would it take? Would the JC still open while it’s under construction?

Blog 14- Working out

Topic: working out- source identification
The database I used for this source was Health Source - Consumer Edition. The source was labeled [Health. Oct2014, Vol. 28 Issue 8, p41-44. 3p. 9 Color Photographs, 1 Chart.] and the article tittle was “Don’t  fear the weight room”.  This article was published by Lindsey Emery and was published on October 1, 2014.

Topic: working out- word summary
The article discusses several benefits of weight lifting exercises for people, including toning the lower as well as the upper body, increasing the metabolism rate and improving the heart, bone and joint health. It also presented some common fears that people have when it comes to working out as well as solutions/suggestions for these fears. One example they provided was how some people don’t go to the gym because they don’t know what type of work out to do while others there do which intimidates them. The solution they provided was that people can watch work out videos in order to learn a few.  They also talked about how some people, especially girls, don’t want to gain a lot of muscle but don’t realize how the gym doesn’t just provide weights therefore they don’t go. But overall message was that whether you are scared or unmotivated, everyone should go at least twice a week to the gym in order to have better health.

Topic: working out- Reflection/questions

This article will be useful throughout my research because I now have an idea of why some people don’t go to the gym. It also will help me out because it talks about the benefits that working out bring which I can relate to why people should start going to the JC more often. Some questions I have after reading the article are: What is the most common fear people have about working out? What can be done to help students not fear going to the JC? Does the JC provide lifting education for students?

Blog 13- Body Immage

Topic: Body Image- source identification
The source I used for this blog was labeled [Europe's Journal of Psychology. 2014, Vol. 10 Issue 2, p301-317. 17p.] and the article tittle was "I Like My Body; Therefore, I Like Myself". The two primary authors of this article are Elena Gatti and Chiara Ionio. This specific article was published in 2009.

Topic: Body Image- Word summary
In this article they explained the results of a study they previously had done which demonstrated how body image affects our self-esteem. According to them this is especially true for teenagers.   In their study they found out how kids that work out tend to have a higher self-esteem than those who don’t.  This is important to take into consideration because a lot of the time, how well we do in certain things depend on how comfortable we are aka our self-esteem, especially for us college students.  This research, stressing the influence of various individual factors and highlighting the psychological distress and dissatisfaction of adolescents, we are able to see the importance of studying this topic and finding out some possible solutions. As the study shows, working out can definitely help with this problem which is why the University of Kentucky provides us with a facility to do so, the JC.

Topic: Body image- Reflection/questions

This article will be useful in further research because I will be able to relate the importance of taking advantage of the JC with this study. Some questions that I came up with are: What would happen if every student actually took some time out of their day to go to the JC? Why do students who work out have a higher self-esteem? Is this the case for everyone?
